More handwriting:
I do not regret having written it. I will submit that telling Winnie Verloc’s story to its anarchistic end of utter desolation, madness, and despair, and telling it as I have told it here, I have not intended to commit a gratuitous outrage on the feelings of mankind.

I think I know what this is. But it’s also nice to leave things cryptic.
Update: I was right.
While we’re on the subject of handwriting, I did an American Scene post some years ago about A. Wainwright’s handwritten and handdrawn guides to hiking in England, especially in the Lake District. I still have mine and use them when I’m there.
This post by Austin Kleon about copying handwriting reminds me of my favorite script to copy: Galileo’s “Theoria speculi concavi sphaerici,” as reproduced in Edward Tufte’s Beautiful Evidence.
That trick of breaking one view of a single large scene into panels? I love it.
If your congregation sings only Hillsong choruses, then their emotional repertoire will be limited to about two different feelings (God-you-make-me-happy, and God-I’m-infatuated-with-you) – considerably less even than the emotional range of a normal adult person. It is why entire congregations sometimes seem strangely adolescent, or even infantile: they lack a proper emotional range, as well as a suitable adult vocabulary. But in the psalter one finds the entire range of human emotion and experience – a range that is vastly wider than the emotional capacity of any single human life. —

Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Roast Fish Collie Weed & Cornbread contains a Psalter-like expanse of emotional capacity. Everyone’s always rejoicing or looking to smite someone. This is presumably not a coincidence.

Can the recipient take a screenshot of the contents of a Burn Note?
By default Burn Notes are created with the “Short phrases” display option which prevents the recipient from taking a screenshot of the entire note. It does this by breaking the note contents into short phrases and displaying them one at a time. It would require many precisely-timed screenshots to capture a note that uses this display option. Furthermore, the result would be a collection of screenshots which are not proveably related instead of a single coherent image.

If this rig held seven passengers, I would spend the next seven or eight minutes concocting an elaborate rationale for owning it, then book a one-way flight to the Northwest.
Good news, everyone! Most of the major historical figures you’ll meet in William Vollmann’s Europe Central are on Facebook.

Andrew [Sullivan’s] writing is not and never has been much about making sense in this way. Andrew is a man of enormous feeling capable of reacting to public figures with ferocious hostility or flushed adoration. His reactions are often completely unhinged, wildly inapposite, and rarely stable over time. Andrew falls in and out of love like a bipolar fourteen year-old diarist. Yet he proceeds — and this is as maddening as it is riveting — as if he were not an overheated, fickle instrument, as if his vehement mutable passions about public persons made perfect sense, were the unimpeachable output of a judicious internal process of cool analysis sensitive only to the objective features of his subjects. —

We learned that glacial outburst floods can arrive within hours, days, or even months after an eruption. After a series of strong earthquakes in 2000, bridge designs were upgraded to meet the force of 8.0 earthquakes. “Weak points” are designed into Icelandic roads that allow them to be washed away in small sections. This relieves the pressure on the remaining road and and bridges, often saving the bridges from being torn away by the massive floods. And, our representative told us, the Road Administration keeps a cache of 100-300 meters of “stock” bridge material on hand at all times, just in case. (via Eventscapes : Iceland « FOP)
